And just like that Angola are unseated as UFWC top dogs after 9 months and 8 matches. Zimbabwe are the new champions, having won this explosive World Cup Qualifier in front of 45,000 fans with two second-half goals. Substitute Shingirai Kawondera struck the first from the edge of the box, before Benjani Mwaruwari headed in a cross from Joel Luphahla. Zimbabwe skipper Peter Ndlovu had a late header disallowed for offside. This was Zimbabwe’s first win since October 2003, and it moves then to third in World Cup Qualifying Group Four.

Congo 0-2 Angola

Another late friendly fixture slipped onto the FIFA fixture list, but they all count in the UFWC. Not that the match caused a change in title-holder. Angola took a side containing just one overseas player to the Revolution stadium in Congo. Flavio and Zelanga scored the goals on 43 and 74 minutes respectively. Congo, a lowly 115 in the FIFA rankings, should not be confused with the stronger Democratic Republic of Congo, ranked 76. Angola are ranked 73, despite an eight-month UFWC domination.

Zambia 0-0 Angola (Angola win 5-4 on pens)

Reigning UFWC Champions Angola won the COSAFA Castle Cup with a penalty shoot out victory in this final against Zambia. There were no goals in regulation time, although both sides had clear-cut scoring chances. So the final was decided on penalties, and Zambia’s star player and technical director Kalusha Bwalya was the unlucky man who missed his kick, giving Angola a 5-4 victory. Angry Zambian fans rioted after the match in scenes which may have damaging implications for their national side. Angola now keep the COSAFA Cup trophy permanently, having completed a hat-trick of wins, after previously winning it in 1999 and 2001.

Mozambique 0-1 Angola

In a sneaky Cosafa Castle Cup match that didn’t appear on the FIFA fixture list but does now appear on FIFA’s results list – so does count towards UFWC rankings – Angola held onto the title and gained an extra ranking point. The Palancas Negras now progress to the final of the Cosafa Cup which, lest we forget, is an annual year-round tournament contested by the 13 national teams of the Confederation of Southern Africa Football Associations.
