Uruguay 1-0 Northern Ireland

Uruguay retained the Unofficial Football World Championships title with a narrow 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo in what was a tightly contested match. It was Northern Ireland’s first chance to contest the UFWC since 1997, when they lost to Germany in Belfast. Uruguay have been holders of the UFWC since beating Argentina in October 2013. Uruguay are also the current Copa America Champions, and if you’re old enough to remember the British Championships you’ll know that Northern Ireland won the trophy in its final year in 1984, thus getting to keep it. These two teams, with a combined population of around five million have a history of “punching above their weight” and they produced a good World Cup warm-up match and another UFWC tie for the records.

Uruguay vs Northern Ireland UFWC preview

Following on from our first article on the UFWC title match between Uruguay and Northern Ireland, and now the squads have been announced, here’s the second part of our preview of the big match, which takes place at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo next Friday, 30 May. Uruguay are the current UFWC champions, having most recently held off the challenge of Austria in March. Northern Ireland are contesting the UFWC for the first time since 1997, when they led Germany 1-0 in Belfast – but went on to lose 3-1.

Can Northern Ireland become UFWC champions?

The next Unofficial Football World Championships match is just over two months away on the 30 May, and it looks set to be a classic. Two teams with a proud and successful footballing history and plenty of passion will play each other. First ever World Cup winners Uruguay face reigning British Champions Northern Ireland in the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo – the venue where the World Cup began back in 1930. It will be the light blue of Uruguay against the shining emerald green of Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland line up for UFWC

Current Unofficial Football World Champions Uruguay will play Northern Ireland on 30 May, ahead of the World Cup finals in Brazil this summer. The fixture could offer Northern Ireland a chance to challenge for the UFWC title – if Uruguay are still the holders. As things stand, the next UFWC title match will see Uruguay play Austria in Klagenfurt on 5 March. If Uruguay avoid defeat, they will retain the UFWC title, and go on to defend it against Northern Ireland…
