For all the brilliant world-class strikes that the UFWC has produced, it can’t be denied that there have also been plenty of goals that have been much less glorious, though every bit as entertaining for those who enjoy a touch of schadenfreude. As part of UFWC Goals Week, here’s Part 1 of our selection of UFWC own goals and oddities:
Top own goals
1966 England vs Wales
Terry Hennessey
A spectacular slice by the Welsh defender eases the world champions into a 4-1 lead. (3.53)
1997 Germany vs Albania
Jurgen Kohler
Under no pressure at all, Kohler heads Albania into a shock lead in Hanover. Germany eventually score a winning goal deep in injury time. (0.07)
2006 Romania vs Slovenia
Andrej Pecnik
Pecnik slices the ball into his own net to complete Romania’s 2-0 win in the final of the Cyprus Tournament. (1.28)
2006 Uruguay vs Egypt
Abdel Al-Saqqa
Another pointless intervention leads to an own goal, this time from Abdel Al-Saqqa. (1.44)
Goalkeeping nightmares
1966 USSR vs Hungary
Scorer: Igor Chislenko, goalkeeper: Jozsef Gelei
This was the opening goal of a World Cup quarter-final. (0.54)
1999 Russia vs Ukraine
Scorer: Andriy Shevchenko, goalkeeper: Alexandr Filimonov
With France having won the group and qualified directly for Euro 2000, these two deadly rivals met in Moscow to decide which of them would reach the play-offs. Russia were 1-0 up and in the box seat but, in the 88th minute, Shevchenko took a free kick from out wide near the halfway line. He swung it into the box, Filimonov misjudged it horrifically, and could only punch it into the net. Russia were out, but Ukraine’s luck would count for nothing, as they would suffer a shock defeat in the play-offs to Slovenia. The Euro 2000 qualifying matches remain, at the time of writing, the only internationals that Russia and Ukraine have ever played against each other. (1.14)
2001 France vs Japan
Scorer: Thierry Henry, goalkeeper: Seigo Narazaki
Henry’s shot wasn’t heading in until Narazaki fumbled it over the line. (0.19)
2007 Turkey vs Hungary
Scorer: Halil Altintop, goalkeeper: Marton Fulop
Altintop’s low near-post cross is inexplicably poked into the goal by keeper Fulop. (3.03)
2010 Argentina vs Spain
Scorer: Carlos Tevez, goalkeeper: Pepe Reina
An unfortunate one for Reina, who slipped at the worst possible moment. (2.23)
Come back tomorrow for the final day of UFWC Goals Week.
