Colombia take UFWC title into Copa knockouts

The UFWC title has reached the knockout stage of the Copa America tournament in the hands of Colombia, the reigning Unofficial Football World Champions. Colombia took the UFWC title from Brazil in a 2-1 group-stage win, then drew with Peru to retain the title and scrape through into the Copa quarter finals - where they'll face UFWC giants Argentina.

Comparing the FIFA and UFWC rankings

FIFA have announced their latest world rankings, and it's no surprise to see current Unofficial Football World Champions France moving to the the top of the list following their World Cup win. The win also moved Les Bleus up the UFWC rankings, but only up to 10th position. Having unified the official and unofficial titles, France are football's undisputed champions. And they are one of only four teams are ranked in both the FIFA and UFWC top tens, the others being England, Brazil and Uruguay. Here we take a look at the FIFA and UFWC rankings, ahead of the next UFWC title match, France v Germany on 6 September.

Confirmed: Next UFWC Match Netherlands vs Poland

The next UFWC title match will take place 4th September 2020 in Amsterdam as confirmed by KNVB after UEFA also presented the "Return to Play" Schedule for the upcoming 2020/2021 season.

Congo 0-2 Angola

Another late friendly fixture slipped onto the FIFA fixture list, but they all count in the UFWC. Not that the match caused a change in title-holder. Angola took a side containing just one overseas player to the Revolution stadium in Congo. Flavio and Zelanga scored the goals on 43 and 74 minutes respectively. Congo, a lowly 115 in the FIFA rankings, should not be confused with the stronger Democratic Republic of Congo, ranked 76. Angola are ranked 73, despite an eight-month UFWC domination.

Copa kings Chile take UFWC title

Chile's penalty shoot-out win over Argentina in the Copa America final ended the nation's 115-year wait for a major football honour. La Roja played their first international match back in 1910 - also against Argentina - but had never won an official tournament until now. They had, however, won the unofficial tournament several times - and now they have done so again. Because the Copa America final was also a UFWC title match, and Chile are the new Unofficial Football World Champions.

Costa Rica 0-0 England: UFWC title into World Cup last 16

Costa Rica retained the UFWC title and will take it into the World Cup round of 16 as winners of group D following this bore-draw with England. Costa Rica had taken the title from Uruguay and then beaten Italy to retain it. They only needed this draw in Belo Horizonte to secure top spot in the qualifying group. England, meanwhile, were playing for pride, but head home without winning a game at Brazil 2014. Los Ticos have been one of the biggest surprise packages of a entertaining and unpredictable tournament. Coach Jorge Luis Pinto has impressed with his meticulous preparation and effective tactics, setting up his energetic team to nullify opponents. That was certainly the case here, as Costa Rica closed England down while only rarely threatening to score.

Costa Rica 1-1 Greece (Costa Rica win 5-3 on pens)

UFWC champions Costa Rica squeezed past Greece into the World Cup quarter finals after a penalty shoot-out settled this long, draining match. Greece had grabbed an injury time equaliser to put the match into extra time, with Costa Rica reduced to ten men. But goalkeeper Keylor Navas ended up being the hero for Los Ticos, saving brilliantly at the end of extra time, them saving the decisive penalty in the shoot-out to put his team through. Few pundits had reckoned on either side reaching the knock-out stages, never mind both.

Czech Republic 5-1 Canada

The Czech Republic took the UFWC title while storming their way to Euro 2004. The unbeaten Czechs topped their Qualifying Group, winning seven out of eight matches, including a 3-1 victory over former holders the Netherlands. With a side including Pavel Nedved of Juventus, Tomas Rosicky and Jan Koller of Borussia Dortmund, and Karel Poborsky of Sparta Prague, the Czechs retained the UFWC title with this impressive victory.
