The 1958 World Cup tournament culminated in the first ever combined WC final / UFWC title match. This was the first World Cup to be broadcast on worldwide television, and those who tuned in were lucky enough to witness the birth of a classic Brazilian side, and the introduction of a genuine footballing legend. In fact, make that two genuine footballing legends. For alongside the great Pele in the Brazilian ranks was the arguably greater Garrincha.

UFWC World Cup Classics: West Germany vs Netherlands, 1974

Euro champions West Germany took on UFWC champions the Netherlands in this 1974 World Cup climax. The Netherlands had entered the tournament unbeaten in 14 UFWC matches, and retained the title all the way to the final. The Dutch were all about total football – pioneered by coach Rinus Michels, and personified by captain Johan Cruyff. While the Dutch practised free-flowing total football, the formidable Germans favoured a more guarded mobile sweeper system. Hosts West Germany also had the crowd on their side.

UFWC World Cup preview: Uruguay's chances in Brazil

The UFWC title is going to the World Cup, in the hands of Unofficial Football World Champions Uruguay. The WC tournament begins in Brazil this Thursday, 12 June, and the UFWC action begins on Saturday, 14 June, when Uruguay play Costa Rica in Group D. Also in Group D are England and Italy, both likely to be involved in UFWC title matches over the next couple of weeks. Depending on results, the unofficial title may then be contested in the knock-out stages, which would mean UFWC title matches all the way to the WC Final.

Unofficial football world champions Peru face Croatia in Miami

The UFWC gets back underway on Friday evening, as Unofficial Football World Champions Peru begin their World Cup warm-up campaign with a match against fellow WC qualifiers Croatia. The match is being played in the United States, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. It's the first of two US-based friendlies for Peru. They play Iceland next Tuesday, at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. It's the start of a series of matches that could see the UFWC title change hands several times, and perhaps be contested at Russia 2018.
