Unofficial world champs Peru qualify for official World Cup

Peru defeated New Zealand in this winner-takes-all UFWC title match and World Cup qualification play-off second leg. The result means that Peru remain Unofficial Football World Champions and qualify for the World Cup finals. That doesn't guarantee that the UFWC title will be contested in Russia next summer, however, with plenty of football to play before then.

Uruguay 0-0 Jordan

Uruguay held off a brave Jordan to retain the UFWC title - and confirm their qualification for the 2014 World Cup finals. Jordan needed to win this play-off second leg by at least five goals to qualify for the World Cup, with Uruguay having won the first leg 5-0. But a win by just one goal tonight would have made Jordan UFWC champions, with both legs counting as separate title matches. In truth, the visitors never really looked like scoring in Montevideo, but they did at least restore some pride after last week's thrashing.

Uruguay 0-0 Tunisia (Uruguay win 3-1 on pens)

This LG Cup Final match was goalless at full-time, with neither UFWC title holders Uruguay nor tournament hosts Tunisia able to create many chances in a slow-paced game. A penalty shoot-out decided matters, and the hero was Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini, who saved three penalty kicks to give his nation a 3-1 win. So Uruguay retained the UFWC title, moving up to 13th place in the overall rankings - and won the LG Cup. But there was some consolation for Tunisia - they will go to the World Cup finals, while Uruguay and the UFWC title will not.

Uruguay retained the Unofficial Football World Championships title with a narrow 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo in what was a tightly contested match. It was Northern Ireland's first chance to contest the UFWC since 1997, when they lost to Germany in Belfast. Uruguay have been holders of the UFWC since beating Argentina in October 2013. Uruguay are also the current Copa America Champions, and if you're old enough to remember the British Championships you'll know that Northern Ireland won the trophy in its final year in 1984, thus getting to keep it. These two teams, with a combined population of around five million have a history of "punching above their weight" and they produced a good World Cup warm-up match and another UFWC tie for the records.

Uruguay 1-3 Costa Rica: Costa Rica take title, Italy await

Costa Rica pulled off a major shock in the heat of Fortaleza to take the UFWC title from Uruguay with an excellent 3-1 win, inspired by Arsenal youngster Joel Campbell. The new Unofficial Football World Champions will face Italy in another title match on Friday. This was actually Costa Rica's sixth UFWC title match victory, although their first since 1963. They were ranked 29th by FIFA going into this tournament, compared to Urugauy's 7th. Brazil 2014 is the 12th World Cup Finals at which the UFWC title has been contested.

Uruguay 2-0 Slovenia: UFWC title heads to World Cup

Unofficial Football World Champions Uruguay will take the UFWC title into the World Cup Finals in Brazil. A 2-0 win over challengers Slovenia saw La Celeste retain the unofficial title, and remain genuine challengers for the official title. This was Uruguay's fifth consecutive match as UFWC champions, and the country's 20th UFWC title match win overall. Uruguay have win the World Cup twice, in 1930 and 1950. Could they do it for a third time in 2014? This confidence-boosting victory proved they have a chance, and also proved they can score goals without Luis Suarez, sidelined following knee surgery.
