Sanchez and Vargas fire Chile to UFWC win

Peru 3-4 Chile

13/10/2015 World Cup Qualifier Estadio Nacional, Lima Scorers: Farfan (2), Guerrero (Peru), Vargas (2), Sanchez (2) (Chile) Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas both scored braces as UFWC champions Chile defeated Peru in this eventful World Cup qualifier in Lima. Jefferson Farfan also scored two goals, and actually gave Peru the lead. But a first half sending-off meant that ten-man Peru weren't able to hold on, in a game that was more one-sided than the scoreline might suggest. Arsenal star Sanchez opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a great finish from a brilliant Mauricio Isla pass. But Peru were soon level, with Farfan driving the ball straight through Claudio Bravo at the keeper's near post. The sending-off came in the 23rd minute, with Christian Cueva rather harshly shown a straight red card for petulantly throwing the ball at Jorge Valdivia. But it was ten-man Peru who scored the next goal, with Farfan netting from the penalty spot to give his side the lead. Peru's advantage didn't last long, though, as Chile equalised and then took the lead before half-time. First Sanchez brilliantly played in Valdivia, who cut the ball back for Vargas to finish. Then Marcelo Díaz set up Sanchez, who swept in his second goal of the evening. At half-time, 11-man Chile led 10-man Peru 3-2. It was 4-2 shortly after the break, when Sanchez and Vargas beat the offside trap, and the Arsenal man set up the Hoffenheim man for another easy finish. Paolo Guerrero scored for Peru in injury time, a lovely finish with the outside of his boot, but it was nothing more than a consolation for his side, with the final score being 4-3 to Chile. Chile retain the UFWC title and remain Unofficial Football World Champions. This was their 15th title match win, and it moves them up to 14th in the all-time rankings, level with the Czech Republic. Two more wins would put them level with Spain and Hungary, and give Chile an opportunity to place an impressive marker in UFWC history. [table id=9 hide_rows=all show_rows=1,13,14,15,16 use_datatables="false" /] The opportunity to get those two wins comes in November in the shape of two more World Cup qualifiers, at home against Colombia, then away to Uruguay. Uruguay beat Colombia 3-0 today, and top the CONMEBOL qualification table on goal difference, ahead of Ecuador and Chile, all of whom have won both of their matches. Uruguay are ranked 11th in the UFWC all-time rankings, and Colombia are ranked 22nd. Both are recent UFWC champions - Uruguay held the title from October 2013 to June 2014, and Colombia held it briefly during the Copa America this June. Chile vs Colombia is the next UFWC title match, in Santiago on 12 November 2015. If Chile retain the title, the next title match will be Uruguay vs Chile, in Montevideo on 17 November. If Colombia take the title, then it will be Colombia vs Argentina on the same day. We'll have full coverage of all upcoming UFWC title matches right here. You can also keep up to date with UFWC action via Twitter or Facebook. You can read more about the UFWC in the official book, Unofficial Football World Champions, which contains a complete history of the unofficial competition from the first ever international match in 1872. It's available in paperback (last few copies remaining) and as an eBook, and is out now. New UFWC book Note: This match was played at the evening of on 13 October in Lima, which was the morning of 14 October in the UK.
