Italy setting new personal UFWC title series record

For the 2nd time after 2007 Lithuania appeared in a UFWC title match, for the 2nd time they lost by 0-2 versus Italy. For Italy winning by 2-0 seems to becoming a common habit as this was the 5th time in a row that La Squadra Azzurra is achieving this result. But this is only part of the story - Italy conquered the UFWC title from the Netherlands 7th September 2020 and successfully defended the crown for 9 matches since then - an new record for the team!

Unofficial Football World Championships vs the World Cup

We love the World Cup here at the UFWC, and are excitedly looking forward to Brazil 2014, which starts in just two months' time. To add to the excitement, there's a good chance that the Unofficial Football World Championships title will be contested at the World Cup tournament. Current UFWC champions Uruguay are on course to take the title to Brazil, although they have a couple of tricky title matches to negotiate first. If the UFWC title does go to Brazil, it won't be the first time the unofficial and official tournaments have crossed over. The UFWC and World Cup lineages are very different, but they have come together several times during football's long and entertaining history.

World Cup Classics: West Germany vs Argentina, 1986

Tumultuous earthquakes killed 20,000 people in Mexico in the run-up to the 1986 World Cup tournament, but the magnificent Azteca remained standing, and the football went ahead. West Germany took the UFWC title into the tournament, but lost it to Denmark in the opening round. The title was then passed to Spain, then Belgium, and then Argentina over the course of a week. Argentina reached the final largely courtesy of Diego Maradona’s brilliance and cheek, famously seeing off England in the quarter-finals with an assist from the ‘hand of god’, and then beating Belgium in the semis. West Germany got a chance to regain the World Cup and the UFWC after beating hosts Mexico on penalties, and then knocking out an excellent French team with a 2-0 win.

Waiting game - the longest fixture gaps in UFWC history (updated)

As the #COVID19 pandemic has brought international and club football to an (almost) worldwide stop in March 2020 first some national club competitions, then also UEFA Europa League and Champions League restarted and now finally also international matches are planned to be restarted with the 2nd edition of UEFA Nations League, a long and unexpected UFWC match break seems to be coming to an end - since the last UFWC match #964 was played 19th November 2019 and the next match #965 is scheduled for 4th November 2020 this is resulting in a gap of 290 days. But that will by no means be the longest gap in the UFWC’s long lineage.
